Guided by Katharina Reiss’s text type theory, this paper conducts a study on the English-Chinese subtitles translation of the film “Manchester by the Sea” (2016). According to text type theory, the target text is judged by the transmission of the predominant function of the source text. This study analyzes the specific translation methods adopted for each text type, finding that text type theory provides a systematic approach to subtitles translation. This study also reveals the significance of punctuation translation. The findings of this study may have guiding significance for further translation practice.
